Rough Draft of Chapter One
"Hey Urlo, wait up!" Kiyiya yelped while doing her best to catch up with her siblings and grandpa, Ringhio. Quickly, Kiyiya dodged a low hanging branch just in time to see Ringhio's tail tip disappear into the brush.
"C'mon, wait up!" Kiyiya yelped and started to race after them.
Thorns tore at her fur with every step she took until she finally caught up with them.
Of course, they stop now that we've reached the clearing. Our destanation.. Kiyiya thought bitterly and sat down. Her siblings started wrestling in the tall grasses and Ringhio laid down to watch them. He was in charge of them right now, to make sure no one was hurt, until they returned to camp for dinner. Right now, the other wolves were out on a hunting trip.
Kiyiya flopped her head onto her paws and sighed. Sometimes she felt as though she was uncared for. Ingored. Rejected. Forgotten. To her pack, it seemed to her as though everything she did was wrong. A mistake. Kiyiya gave another sigh as a butterfly alighted down onto her nose. She quickly bared her small fangs and shook it off.
"Leave me alone." The red wolf pup growled.
"You can't let this get you down," the butterfly danced around Kiyiya's head then landed on her shoulder, "Adventure awaits beyond Red Hill."
"Beyond?" Kiyiya echoed as the butterfly took to the air and fluttered above her head.
Suddenly a howl sounded through the forest and Ringhio jumped to his paws.
"That's the pack, they've come back from the hunting trip." He turned to the pups: Kiyiya, Coda and Urlo, "Time to go back to camp."
Ringhio and 2 pups trotted off in the direction of camp with Kiyiya not far behind. The red wolf dipped her head in thanks to the butterfly before racing in the direction her grandpa and siblings were headed. The first one in camp always got the best dinner from mom, and Kiyiya was usually last. It wasn't like tonight was going to be any different.
The butterfly alighted down on a flower and began to drink up nectar.
"One must see what lies beyond her homeland, so she can truely understand what happiness she posseses." Then the insect gracefully lifted up into the sky and seemed to disappear into the clouds.
Bak at camp, the other wolves of Leaf Pack had returned from the hunt. In spite of the decreasing amout of prey, they had managed to kill a deer.
Always, the Alpha male and female were the ones to eat first.
Artiglio and his mate Zanna proudly trotted up to the dead animal's body and began to eat. Next came the beta, Fuoco. Since second in comand, he was always second to eat.
Only after the wolves with high postitions got first choice, could the others eat. Ringhio and Basette, the pup's father, were the last to eat.
Naso, the pup's mother, did not eat with the other wolves however. She took the responsibility of feeding the pups.
Since they were still young, Kiyiya, Coda, and Urlo couldn't have meat yet. After the hunt, Naso would eat deer meat and when she returned to camp she would reguradate the meat to her pups. Then the pups would eat.
"Me first mommy!" Coda howled, as he licked her snout longing for food.
"No me!" Urlo snarled and shoved her brother over with her front paws.
Kiyiya sat down and stared at her mother. She knew she would be fed last,
again. She always was. Not like tonight was going to be any different. And it wasn't. For some reason Naso always fed Coda first.
Mamma's boy. Kiyiya snorted silently.
Next her sister Urlo was fed.
Then came Kiyiya, but always there was barely any food left for her.
Once finished eating, the pups retired to their den to sleep. Tonight was the Moon Celebration, and they would need energy to be able to stay up for the Celebration.
Kiyiya, however, thought for a while before drifting off to sleep.
No one around here even cares about me. It's like I'm invisible.Her eyes grew cold.
Who needs family, friends or a pack anyway?Her tail started lashing angirly and her cold eyes seemed to blaze a cold fire.
Tonight, durng the Celebration I'll sneak away. I'll leave Red Hill. Like that butterfly said!The red wolf pup laid down on her moss bed and slept. She too would need her energy if she would be traveling all night.
I'm leaving Red Hill, and they won't even notice I'm gone...
